| LINK School Junior Golf In the Spring of 2008, PlaySmart partnered with the LINK Community School (Newark, NJ) to sponsor PlaySmart's seventh annual Junior Golf Program, a unique and exciting golf camp for students. Like previous programs, the Junior Golf Program lasted five weeks and involved 20 boys from LINK's seventh and eighth grade classes. The Junior Golf Program consisted of weekly golf activities and discussions about specific life virtues that are also applicable to golf. Junior golf program kids met once a week for five weeks, and each week a player from the New York Giants, and George McGovern, chaplain for the New York Yankees and the Giants, spoke with the students. Michael Mathews, a second year tight end from the Giants, was the primary Giants representative this year. The group concentrated on one character trait per week, including attentiveness, diligence, truthfulness, loyalty and gratefulness. The students also learned about the different aspects of golf that demonstrate the importance of each virtue. Professional golf instructors assisted to ensure proper golf technique. The program culminated in a golf outing to a par-3 golf course in New Jersey where the kids were able to show off their respective golf skills. The kids enjoyed a fun-filled golf outing, in addition to delivering brief presentations about what they enjoyed most about the Junior Golf Program. PlaySmart has found that teaching virtues through athletics can be impactful; the success of the Junior Golf Program is a unique program that demonstrates this impact. We would once again like to thank the Link School, Cheslea Piers Golf Club, Chelsea Piers Scholarship Fund and George McGovern and the New York Giants for their continued involvement in this very rewarding program. We look forward to continuing this program for many years to come. |
