Fellowship Foundation Youth Connection

In 2004, the Fellowship Foundation, with the help of PlaySmart, Inc. hosted the 15th annual Youth Connection in New Orleans Louisiana . This great tradition began as a way to reward students in the Fellowship Foundation for their accomplishments in the classroom. Students who maintain a 2.5 GPA are invited to participate in this great event. Each year the young members of the Fellowship Foundation meet up with students from other organizations around the south to get to know eachother, share ideas and explore the world of opportunity surrounding them. In 2004, 250 boys from New Orleans , Atlanta , Jackson , MS and Tuskegee , AL got together for a weekend of true fellowship. During the course of the weekend, the kids visited several New Orleans colleges and universities. Xavier, Dillard, Tulane, Loyola and the University of New Orleans all welcomed the group to their campuses. Weekend highlights included a reception for several Negro Baseball League veterans. The reception for these great ball players fit in nicely with a discussion lead by New Orleans sports personality Roe Brown on "The Image of the African American Male in the media." Tulane University hosted a workshop focused on the problems facing youth in American Society. During this workshop, the students broke up into small discussion groups and talked about problems, like low self-esteem, facing young people today and how to address those problems. They also talked about Pop Culture, specifically, Hip-Hop music and the effect that it has on the self-image of our young people today. The young men who participated in the 2004 Youth Connection were challenged to evaluate themselves, identify the challenges facing them and plot a course for success in the future.
