| LINK School Junior Golf Program - Year 3 In the Spring of 2004, PlaySmart partnered with the LINK Community School (Newark, NJ) to deliver it's 3rd Annual Junior Golf Program, a unique and exciting golf camp for students. The Junior Golf Program lasted five weeks and involved 20 boys from LINK’s seventh and eighth grades. The Golf Program comprised of weekly golf activities and discussions about specific life virtues that also come into play during golf. Participants met once a week for five weeks, and each week Ian Allen or Omar Smith, players for the New York Giants, and George McGovern, chaplain for the New York Yankees and the Giants, spoke with the students. The group concentrated on one character trait, including attentiveness, diligence, truthfulness, loyalty and gratefulness. The students also learned different aspects of golf that demonstrated the importance of each virtue. Teaching virtues through athletics was quite successful. Professional golf instructors were also on hand to ensure proper technique. The program culminated in a golf outing to a par-3 golf course where the kids got to apply their respective golf skills on the golf course. At the end of the outing, the kids presented what they learned about themselves and the virtues presented during the program. Many thanks to the Cheslea Piers Golf Club, Chelsea Piers Scholarship Fund, George McGovern and the New York Giants. PlaySmart would also like to thank Rick Kahn for developing his third Junior Golf Program. Many thanks too to PlaySmart director Chris Lutz and volunteer Omar Brown. |
