Omaha Big Wheel Derby

PlaySmart has continued its robust activity in the Omaha, Nebraska, area in 2003. In July, PlaySmart sponsored the 21st Annual "Big Wheel Derby" held at Miller Park in Omaha. This event is a big event in Omaha and PlaySmart is excited about our contribution to the event's success.

The "Big Wheel Derby" was first developed by Bob Rodgers, Jr., in 1982 and has been building in size and importance every year since the first year. The concept of the "Big Wheel Derby" is a simple one: a bike race is held and every child who finishes wins a trophy. It doesn't matter what type of bike is used, bikes include Big Wheels, bicycles, dirt bikes, 10-speeds, etc. In total, 300 trophies were awarded in the Derby! According to Bob Rodgers, "This race is just like life. If you start and finish, you get a reward. If you give up and quit, you don't get anything." This is a simple message, but a very powerful one and one in which we at PlaySmart believe.

PlaySmart benefited from extensive local coverage in the media, with PlaySmart Director, Derek Leathers, doing an outstanding job of promoting PlaySmart in the Omaha community. Stay tuned for some of the media clips from the event!

We're excited to have the opportunity to help Bob Rodgers, Jr., and our friends in Omaha make a difference in the Omaha community. We look forward to building on this success and making an continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of kids in Omaha.
