PlaySmart Launches Scholarship Program PlaySmart is proud to announce that we have launched a sports camp scholarship program! In June 2002, PlaySmart partnered with Tulane University's Men and Women's Basketball teams to send 21 youngsters from the New Orleans area to Tulane's basketball camp. 12 girls, from 5th through 8th grade, attended the girl's basketball camp and 9 boys attended the boy's basketball camp. Both camps were week-long day camps and included instruction from Tulane basketball players & coaches and other outside participants. The camp focused on fundamental skills development. In addition to the rigorous athletic training, PlaySmart conducted after-hours academic sessions with each of the PlaySmart scholarship recipients. The kids were extremely excited to be coached and taught by some of their heroes from the New Orleans community, the players from Tulane University. To attend the camp, kids from three different middle schools in the New Orleans area were required to fill out a Scholarship Application. In this application, the kids were asked to describe their goals for the summer, for the camp, and for their high school and post-high school careers. Kids were also required to receive a letter of recommendation from one of their teachers or guidance counselors. Overall, we were very pleased with the group we assembled! We're confident they learned a tremendous amount about basketball fundamentals - and life fundamentals. PlaySmart is excited to be partnering with existing camp providers.
